Aglag Buteel Monastery Day Trip
Visit Aglag Buteel Monastery, a peaceful Buddhist site located on a rocky, forested mountainside about 100 km northwest of Ulaanbaatar. Created by artist and Buddhist master G. Purevbat, the monastery beautifully combines spirituality, nature, art, and Mongolian Buddhist symbolism.
Upon arrival, visitors will see blue, white, and orange stupas representing important Buddhist deities:
Blue stupa — Ochirvaani, protector of the land
White stupa — Janraisag, guardian against suffering
Orange stupa — Manzushir, deity of wisdom
A paved road leads to the mountain base, followed by a scenic hiking trail to the temple through peaceful natural surroundings.
Inside and around the temple, unique rock formations, tree roots, and natural shapes have been transformed into animal figures inspired by Buddhist legends and Purevbat’s meditation visions. The second floor features the “Strange Things” museum, displaying rare exhibits from Purevbat’s personal collection, including exotic animal skins and unusual curiosities.
After visiting the temple, travelers can enjoy nearby hiking trails and explore more unusual rocks, trees, and forest scenery.
