Aglag Temple
This monastery is located on a rocky, wooded mountainside, 100 km northwest of Ulaanbaatar. When you arrive, you’ll see blue, white, and orange stupas representing Mongolian deities. The blue stupa stands for Ochirvaani, protector of the land; the white for Janraisag, guardian against suffering; and the orange for Manzushir, deity of wisdom. A paved road leads to the mountain's base, then a hiking trail takes you to the temple, where unique rock formations depict animals from Buddhist legends.
Inside the temple, two natural rocks were left in place due to a wildfire warning. G.Purevbat, the temple's creator, used nature’s unique rocks and tree roots to make animal figures seen in his meditation dreams. On the second floor, the "Strange Things" museum displays Purevbat’s collection of exotic animal exhibits, like an anaconda skin, a giant crocodile skin, and a unicorn skull. After visiting, travelers can hike nearby trails to see more unusual rocks and trees.
